IVREA AND SURROUNDING AREA
Canavese is a geographical area located in the north-east part of the province of Turin. It is a splendid corner of Piedmont that includes an infinite number of natural, historical and artistic treasures that include castles, towers and ancient churches. It is surrounded by one of the most important Morainic amphitheaters in Europe. When the glacier Baltea began it’s retreat at the end of the great ice age, it left behind the long 25 km moraine near Ivrea, the “Serra d’Ivrea”, and formed a large scenic basin with many lakes such as the 5 lake area in Ivrea, and the Candia and Viverone lakes. The nerve center is the town of Ivrea, the Roman Eporedia now a municipality in the province of Turin with approximately 24,000 inhabitants. « ...Ivrea la bella |

Today the city extends on either side of the Dora Baltea river, it’s historical city center hugging the hill that leads to the castle and the cathedral (267 m. above sea level). The social-economic development of Ivrea, especially after the second world war, was linked primarily to the growth and to the social and political awareness of the Olivetti Group, which hosted it’s administrative and industrial headquarters. With the crisis that Olivetti experienced beginning in the early 1990s, the economic and occupational structure of Ivrea underwent a difficult transition; there was an increase the number of small and medium industries as well as growth in the tertiary industry. In the area surrounding Ivrea today, there are many small to medium size companies specialized in various types of technology.
The Valchiusella valley is approximately 25 km long and is located on the boundary of the province of Turin and the Aosta Valley, just a few kilometers from the provinces of Biella and Vercelli. The Chiusella river, from which the valley takes it’s name, flows through the entire area to then flow into the Dora Baltea river about 10 km south of Ivrea. Despite it’s area of just 143 square kilometers, the Valchiusella valley offers an extraordinary variety of natural landscapes as well as villages, farms and pastures. | ![]() |
