Trail is a mountain running discipline that has grown enormously over the last few years, both in terms of participants as well as number of competitions,  thanks to this new concept of running that highly values the environmental aspects of the event, yet maintains a strong competitive element.  In just a few years, this new event has gained thousands of enthusiasts, exalted by the new sensations they find by participating in these races through little know but impressive panoramic areas, and at the same time discovering new itineraries.

THE COURSE

The course takes place in the Morainic amphitheater of Canavese.  The participants must be completely auto-sufficient and may use a walking poles if desired.  The poles may not be left at any point during the race, nor may they be picked up along the course.  A hydration pack is obligatory, as are trail boots. The race will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday 14 June from the Ivrea Kayaking Club.

The course follows the road along the river (lungo Dora), turning right into Corso Massimo d’Azeglio, then left into Via Cascinette until reaching the intersection with Via Montodo.  This is where the course leaves Ivrea and enters the town of Cascinette. This first part of the race is over flat, paved roads through the small towns.

At the Cascinette lake, the road becomes unpaved.  Crossing the provincial road, the course begins to climb, passing the Nassio houses in the town of Chiaveranno (250 m. above sea level). The path continues near the church of San Stefano to the area of Chiaverano, where the view of the plains is replaced by a scenic landscape of hills and mountains.

The route continues upwards - the steepest points are 6-8% - reaching Andrate (890 m. above sea level) which is a town on the edge of the moraine.  The athletes go by the castle of Andrate, cross the provincial road that leads to the Biella area, and continue to climb. After passing a relay tower and skirting the mountain stream Viona that divides the provinces of Torino and Biella, the small town of Pontile is reached.

A right turn at Pontile, takes the race onto the Trecciolino road for approximately 1,5 km, crossing the Viona and arriving at an intersection that leads to Bric Paglie.

Turing left towards Bric Paglie, the trail climbs to a mountain cabin at the summit of the mountain (1800 m. above sea level).  This is the only point on the course where water refills will be available.

Upon reaching Bric Paglie, the trail crosses a field where the participants have to cross the Viona Stream (about 2 m. wide) There may be a small footbridge available, otherwise the athletes can walk across the rocks or wade the stream.

On the other side of the stream is another mountain house, the Baita di Valneira, on Mombarone (1900 m. above sea level).  The climb terminates here and the long descent down an unpaved road to San Giacomo (1200 m. above sea level) begins.

For approximately 6 km, the dirt road is the same one used for the annual Ivrea-Mombarone race.

At Pontile, the course turns right, crosses fields and a little-used trail to the community center of Andrate.  The trail continues straight on towards the Salamia region and to the Paratore descent, which is very steep and paved with cobblestones.  This road end in Bienca, a hamlet of the town Chiaverano.

From Bienca, the trail proceeds for 3 km, where the runners will one again be on the course used for the annual Ivrea-Mombarone ascent.  This course will be follow to the Crist area of Ivrea.

The final part of the race is over secondary roads in Ivrea that lead back to the Ivrea Kayak Club, and to the finish line.
